What Saints of the Fallen Cross Are About
Youโre thrown into a zombie apocalypse, but this is not your ordinary zombie game; itโs a one-of-a-kind nightmare seen from above, brutally difficult with survival mechanics that keep you in suspense. Saints of the Fallen Cross consists of scavenging, fighting, and trying not to die in a world that wants to see you dead.
Whether you play solo or with friends via LAN, P2P, or Steam, the choice is yours. There are no hand-holding, looting for supplies, upgrading your hideout, skill learning, or the already difficult decision of whether to help or betray other survivors, all in a bid to remain alive.
One of the things I liked about the game was how it automatically saves your progress, allowing you and your squad to jump in whenever you please. The inventory system uses a mini puzzle mechanic where you have to fit items in your backpack the right way, and if you carry too much, you become slower. Easy, but so much thinking goes on in your head as to whether to hoard everything or not.
Combat and Customization
Survivors may be outfitted with diverse looks and gear, and it is up to them to choose between melee or ranged attacks, depending on the challenge they face, trading a pipe for a sniper rifle in the blink of an eye. A moment to crack a zombieโs skull with a pipe and another behind a crosshair, lining up that perfect long-distance sniper shot. There are traps and grenades, too, with ways to fool zombies into hazardous circumstances if one is witty!
The skill tree is gigantic, allowing anyone to shape their character the way they like. Whether you want to be a stealthy scavenger, a heavy-hitting tank, or some tactical genius, itโs all under your control. Thereโs a story, with quests, dialogue choices, and a journal that tracks your choices, so itโs not going to be mindless shooting all day.
Base Building and Survival
Building is a core part of the Saints of the Fallen Cross. You can either create a rudimentary safe house or go grand and make full-sized fortresses. Walls, campfires, and workbenches, you name it, itโs in. Nothing lasts forever, though; when buildings decay, you need to repair or replace.
And it shows itโs not only about building. You can use the lockpicking minigame to bust open locked places, plant your crops, chop wood, and even dig for hidden treasure. Atmospheric sound design is equally impressive; footsteps vary based on how you traverse the terrain, and the atmospheric tension screams impending doom.
The Zombies (And Other Threats)
These zombies are no longer just some unguided drones. They react, swarm, and the spawn system of the game adds to the pressure. Then there are those NPC survivors who also have their business to attend. Some will aid you at times, and others, it will be your game or theirs. You may also be interested in: Void War Free (v1.0.0)
Further onboard are the toxic gas zones, environmental traps, and many other ways to bite the dust if ever spaced out. Saints of the Fallen Cross is serious; every decision matters, every shot fired matters, and survival is never guaranteed.
Gather up your crew, fortify your base, and see how long you can survive.
